Spring Gate was one of the first paintings I created while exploring the square format in 2025. Working in a square composition presented a new challenge, encouraging a more compact and balanced arrangement of forms within the canvas.
The painting depicts a small traditional palace gate framed by blooming spring trees and stone walls. Rather than approaching the scene with restraint, I intentionally allowed the composition to be filled with vibrant, expressive color. The ground is scattered with lively strokes of yellow, turquoise, violet, and coral, almost like confetti across the path, creating a sense of celebration and movement within the landscape.
The bold brushwork throughout the painting emphasizes the physical act of painting itself. Each mark remains visible, allowing the energy of the brushstrokes to contribute to the atmosphere of the scene.
While the title refers literally to a gate during the spring season, it also carries a more symbolic meaning. A gate suggests transition: the act of stepping forward into something new. In that sense, the painting reflects the feeling of renewal and possibility that often accompanies the arrival of spring.
