“Somewhere in the Mountains”

Somewhere in the Mountains captures the feeling of discovering a quiet place tucked away from the rest of the world, a traditional hanok nestled among the mountains, a little creek nearby, and bright orange flowers spilling across the foreground.

I began this painting nearly a year before completing it, setting it aside for several months before returning to it in the summer. Coming back to the painting with fresh eyes allowed me to rediscover the scene and the feeling I wanted it to hold.

While painting, I kept imagining what it would be like to step into this landscape: to sit beside the creek, wander through the garden, and spend a slow afternoon surrounded by mountains and trees. More than anything, I wanted this piece to carry that sense of peace. It’s a small escape to somewhere beautiful, quiet, and perhaps just a little bit imagined.
