This painting was inspired by the quiet anticipation of early spring in Seoul’s historic palace gardens. Painted shortly as the plum blossoms began to bloom at Changdeokgung Palace, the work reflects that moment when winter is beginning to soften but the air still carries a deep coolness.
Plum blossoms hold a long cultural significance in Korea. Historically associated with resilience and renewal, they were also linked to the symbolism of the royal Yi family. Seeing them bloom within the palace grounds creates a subtle connection between nature, history, and place.
The painting was developed using a limited palette and built over a deep navy underpainting. Rather than covering this base layer completely, I intentionally allowed much of it to remain visible throughout the composition. The blue undertone acts as a unifying atmosphere, suggesting the cool air of late winter while allowing the brighter elements of the scene to emerge.
Small accents of color appear in the dancheong patterns of the palace architecture and in the plum blossoms themselves. These brighter notes bring movement and life to the painting, guiding the viewer’s eye through the branches and toward the architecture beyond.
The piece was completed over approximately two weeks in the studio after developing the composition through sketchbook studies. My goal with this work was to capture not just the appearance of the palace garden, but the quiet, luminous feeling of standing there just before spring begins.
