Palace Afternoons depicts Hyangwonjeong Pavilion, a serene structure set within a lotus pond at Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. The pavilion has long been associated with quiet moments of reflection, historically serving as a place where members of the royal court could step away from the formality of palace life and enjoy the surrounding landscape.
In this painting, a figure sits in the foreground holding a traditional fan, gazing toward the pavilion across the water. Her presence invites the viewer into the scene, suggesting the simple pleasure of spending an unhurried afternoon within the palace grounds.
The composition was created using a limited palette dominated by cerulean blue and warm yellow. These two colors interact throughout the painting, in the sky, foliage, grass, and architecture, creating a sense of harmony and movement across the surface.
Bold, unblended brushstrokes were intentionally left visible to emphasize texture and atmosphere. Swirling marks in the sky and rhythmic strokes in the grass convey the quiet motion of the landscape: shifting light, moving air, and the gentle passage of time.
Today, visitors to Gyeongbokgung often gather near this pavilion to relax and take in the peaceful surroundings. Palace Afternoons reflects that shared experience, a moment of calm within the heart of a bustling city.
