Bloom continues my exploration of spring within the palace landscape, focusing on the moment when flowering trees begin to transform the architecture around them.

In this composition, a traditional Korean pavilion is framed by branches heavy with blossoms. The surrounding flowers create a natural enclosure around the building, emphasizing the sense that the structure is temporarily immersed in the color and movement of the season.

The painting was developed through multiple layers of paint, allowing the surface to build gradually in texture and depth. The sky carries a sense of motion through swirling brushstrokes, while the blossoms are applied in thicker passages of color, giving the impression that the trees are actively bursting into bloom.

Warm light from the structure contrasts with the cooler blues of the roof and sky, creating a balance between warmth and atmosphere within the scene.

Like many of my spring paintings, Bloom reflects the feeling of walking through Korea’s historic palace gardens during blossom season, when architecture, landscape, and seasonal change come together to create a fleeting but memorable experience.
